Training for Trainers on Promoting and Implementing the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs): How to Participate

16 August 2024

Implementing gender equality in organizations is not just a way to achieve equal rights and opportunities for women and men, but also a path to development and increased work efficiency. One of the tools to achieve this goal is the implementation of the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) in companies.

WEPs were developed by UN Women and the UN Global Compact. They are the foundation for creating an inclusive and equitable environment in organizations, where every woman can realize herself and her potential. It is also an effective tool for increasing productivity, strengthening reputation, and a step towards creating a more just and gender-balanced business environment in Ukraine.

From August 28th to 30th, we are organizing training in Kyiv for trainers on promoting WEPs. The goal is to prepare qualified individuals who can effectively transfer knowledge about WEPs within their organizations and contribute to the promotion and implementation of these principles into business practices. After completing the training, participants will be able to effectively conduct capacity-building sessions on WEPs implementation for representatives of the private sector and civil society working on expanding women's economic opportunities.

"The implementation of WEPs by state and private companies, civil society organizations, and business associations is important for the sustainable, gender-responsive, and inclusive economic recovery of the country, for ensuring transformational results and achieving long-term solutions, as well as women's participation in these processes. UN Women in Ukraine supports the promotion of WEPs as an effective tool for achieving gender equality and strengthening the position of women in the labor market and society in general," said Halyna Meshcheryakova, Program Specialist at UN Women Ukraine.

The training course on WEPs implementation for achieving gender equality and supporting the expansion of women's economic opportunities during the full-scale war and post-war recovery for representatives of the private sector was developed by the NGO "Ukrainian Center for Investment and Trade Promotion" within the framework of the "Expanding Women's Opportunities in Business" initiative.

"WEPs are a kind of roadmap for achieving gender equality in the workplace. They contribute to creating a comfortable climate within teams, attracting talented female employees, and are an additional motivational factor for employees, which affects business performance. The implementation of WEPs is a key success factor for companies striving for sustainable development and a positive social impact," comments Iryna Tytarchuk, Executive Director of the Ukraine Investment and Trade Facilitation Center

Background:

The Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of seven principles that serve as a tool to guide businesses in promoting gender equality and empowering women in the workplace, labor market, and society. Through their implementation, companies change their approaches to supporting women, protecting their rights, and treating them fairly in the workplace.

"Empowering Women in Business" is an initiative to raise awareness, conduct training, and provide informational support to representatives of the private sector to improve their professional skills in implementing the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and implementing relevant programs, as well as to facilitate the creation of new partnerships with private companies, business associations, and NGOs to promote gender equality and expand women's economic opportunities.

"UN Women" is the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women. It is the leading body coordinating the work of the UN system in the field of gender equality. It is a subsidiary body of the UN General Assembly, established by the Assembly's decision in 2010 to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women worldwide, increase the efficiency of using available resources, and consolidate the mandates and functions of individual UN system units that dealt exclusively with gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Office Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine ensures the implementation of state policy to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women and men in Ukraine and the corresponding coordination of interaction between central executive bodies.

Ukraine Investment and Trade Facilitation Center is an independent non-profit organization specializing in supporting the development of small and medium-sized businesses, promoting the implementation of women's economic empowerment initiatives, trade, and export.
