Workshops for Knowledge and Experience Exchange on Women's Empowerment

16 August 2024

A series of workshops titled "Synergy of Cooperation: Best Practices of Private Companies in Empowering Women" is launching, aiming to concentrate the experience of entrepreneurs in an interested environment and create conditions for knowledge dissemination.

The "Synergy of Cooperation: Best Practices of Private Companies in Empowering Women" workshops will bring together representatives of private enterprises, business associations, and non-governmental organizations, who will share their experiences in promoting the rights and economic opportunities of women during the full-scale war and post-war recovery of the country.

Within the framework of the workshops, participants will be able to:

  • Share the experiences of private companies, business associations, and non-governmental organizations in empowering women;
  • Become familiar with the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs);
  • Learn how to implement these principles in their companies or create partnerships for their implementation;
  • Discuss ideas for strengthening women's economic activity in regions and communities.

Traditionally, there will be a discussion using the "World Cafe" method, the format of which involves working together in small groups. Participants will be able to propose ideas to support women in the workplace, find ways to build cooperation between private companies, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies, as well as discuss the implementation of practical steps with a small budget.

Workshops for entrepreneurs are not being held in Ukraine for the first time. Such events are both a response to the important critical role of women in the country's economy, especially during the full-scale Russian invasion, and a reaction to the global need to balance gender equality and empower women.

"Employer initiatives to promote gender equality demonstrate a comprehensive approach that helps transform Ukrainian private and state-owned companies that are signatories to the WEPs, and society as a whole, to empower women in all aspects, including ensuring equal pay and career growth, combating discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace, choosing diverse professions, and harmoniously combining work and family responsibilities for women and men. In cooperation with the government, business, and civil society, we are laying the foundation for women to become true leaders of gender-responsive recovery in Ukraine and EU integration processes," said Halyna Meshcheryakova, Program Specialist at UN Women Ukraine.

In the near future, it is planned to hold three workshops, each of which will be attended by 25 participants:

  • August 29, 2024 - Kyiv;
  • September 18, 2024 - Lviv;
  • November 29, 2024 - Kyiv.

In addition, online events are planned for 2025.

"In the context of current events, it is women who can become a source of change that sets a new vector for the development of economic and social sectors. The implementation of WEPs supports women's initiatives, raises business awareness of gender equality, and helps create conditions for joint economic development in individual communities and the country as a whole," comments Iryna Tytarchuk, Executive Director of the Ukraine Investment and Trade Facilitation Center

Background:

The Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of seven principles that serve as a tool to guide businesses in promoting gender equality and empowering women in the workplace, labor market, and society. Through their implementation, companies change their approaches to supporting women, protecting their rights, and treating them fairly in the workplace.

"Empowering Women in Business" is an initiative to raise awareness, conduct training, and provide informational support to representatives of the private sector to improve their professional skills in implementing the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and implementing relevant programs, as well as to facilitate the creation of new partnerships with private companies, business associations, and NGOs to promote gender equality and expand women's economic opportunities.

"UN Women" is the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women. It is the leading body coordinating the work of the UN system in the field of gender equality. It is a subsidiary body of the UN General Assembly, established by the Assembly's decision in 2010 to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women worldwide, increase the efficiency of using available resources, and consolidate the mandates and functions of individual UN system units that dealt exclusively with gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Office Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine ensures the implementation of state policy to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women and men in Ukraine and the corresponding coordination of interaction between central executive bodies.

Ukraine Investment and Trade Facilitation Center is an independent non-profit organization specializing in supporting the development of small and medium-sized businesses, promoting the implementation of women's economic empowerment initiatives, trade, and export.
